Urgent and intense prayer is needed for Sri Lanka after Window International Network (WIN) recently received reports that innocent civilians are being killed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. Sri Lankan troops killed the head of the LTTE’s vast international financing network and 16 other fighters, and captured a hospital in the last town the separatist guerrillas hold, the military said on Thursday, March 12, 2009. Sri Lanka’s military has encircled the LTTE in a mere 15 square miles of the island nation’s northeastern coast and is fighting to deal a death blow to a civil war that has raged off and on since 1983. Of great concern is the “extreme brutality” reportedly done by LTTE. “This is the destiny of the innocent Tamil civilians who tried to escape into government-controlled areas,” a Christian leader, who sent shocking graphic photos, told WIN in an e-mail this week. “If caught, they will be burned alive. … I felt a demonic presence operating in those areas. …God have mercy upon Sri Lanka.”

‘Extreme brutality’ reportedly done by terrorist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
WIN PRAYER ALERT

Urgent and intense prayer is needed for Sri Lanka after Window International Network (WIN) recently received reports that innocent civilians are being killed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, according to Country Reports on Terrorism 2007.

Since 2007, more than 5,000 people have been killed and many thousands more displaced as the conflict escalated between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE.

Sri Lankan troops killed the head of the LTTE’s vast international financing network and 16 other fighters, and captured a hospital in the last town the separatist guerrillas hold, the military said on Thursday, March 12, 2009, Reuters reported. Sri Lanka’s military has encircled the LTTE in a mere 15 square miles of the island nation’s northeastern coast and is fighting to deal a death blow to a civil war that has raged off and on since 1983.

According to the military, about 38,900 people have fled into government areas since January 2009, Reuters reported. A UNICEF report estimated that between 150,000 and 200,000 civilians were trapped by the fighting inside a narrowing combat zone of about 50 square kilometers, according to Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN).

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said its latest attempts to evacuate sick and wounded civilians out of the combat zone by sea was postponed on March 11 due to lack of security guarantees from the two parties to the conflict, IRIN reported.

The ICRC started evacuating sick and wounded civilians by sea on February 10 when overland convoys could not proceed due to security fears. In eight sea evacuations, more than 2,700 sick and wounded civilians and their relatives were evacuated from Putumattalan, at the edge of the combat zone, south to Trincomalee District, in government-controlled areas.

Sri Lanka is ranked No. 36 on Open Doors’ 2008 World Watch List of nations where Christians are persecuted for their faith. According to Window International Network’s Praying Through The Window 9 prayer calendar, the day of prayer for Sri Lanka is on day 15.

Pray for:

• The extreme brutality by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to stop. Pray for the defeat of the terrorist organization.
• Pray that the members of the Liberation Tigers group responsible for violence against innocent people will be caught and properly dealt with. Pray The Bible, Mark 4:22 (NIV).
• Pray that the demonic forces that are using the Liberation Tigers organization like puppets to be toppled, and that the Tamil people will be safe. Pray that Liberation Tigers leaders will experience conversion to Christianity. Pray The Bible, 1 Timothy 2:1–4 (NIV).
• Pray that humanitarian aid and assistance will reach displaced evacuees. Pray The Bible, Psalm 35:10 (NIV).
• Healing, comfort and protection for Sri Lankans who have lost loved ones in the conflict.
• Sri Lankans to look for Jesus and received His salvation.
• Pray that the Kingdom of God will be firmly established in this land.
