Emergency Prayer Alert

SOMALIA

Deadly violence between government troops and al-Shabaab terrorists has forced more than 200,000 residents to flee the capitol city of Mogadishu since May, 2009, according to the United Nations.

Eyewitness reports describe the nation’s capitol of Somalia as a ghost town with some sections completely deserted. Militants have taken over many buildings – even hospitals. Those medical facilities not controlled by extremists are overwhelmed with victims from the ongoing violence. At least 50 military troops have been admitted since July 5, 2009.

The United Nations has no way of knowing how many citizens are still trapped in Mogadishu, and are unable to attempt an escape to rescue them because of the war being waged in the streets.

Refugee camps outside the capitol are overflowing and lack many basic necessities. “Families face an agonizing choice,” the Associated Press notes, “stay in streets where men fire mortars and machine-guns that have killed children asleep in their beds, or head out of town, where camps for the displaced are severely overstretched.”

One humanitarian aid group reports that half a million internally displaced persons (IDPs) are struggling to survive along the sides of the road leading from Mogadishu to the town of Afgoye. “It is freezing at night and sweltering by day, ” the group explains. “There is little food or water. Attacks are common.”

PRAY:

  • Pray for God to arise and intervene on behalf of those who are suffering in this crisis. Pray for Him to provide an abundance of clean drinking water, food, shelter, and safety for those who are trying to avoid the violence. (Psalm 12:5; II Corinthians 1:3-5)
  • Pray the Lord will speak to Somalis in dreams and visions. Pray the dreams will be of the Salvation message, and that revival will come immediately to the refugee camps.
  • Pray for God to give wisdom to President Sharif Ahmed, the head of the fragile, interim government, and that he will make all of his decisions for Somalia based on Biblical principles. (Ecclesiastes 7:19) Pray for a strong military that will be loyal to and take orders from the President, and will be strong and united to overcome all of the terrorist.
  • Pray for the Holy Spirit to convince other nations to join in fending off these terrorists right away, and they will play an important part in restoring order to Somalia. (Isaiah 41:1)
  • Pray all acts of violence and terrorism will halt immediately, and permanently.
  • Pray for God to confuse, confound, and disband al-Shabaab, Hizbul-Islam, and any other murderous or terrorist groups roaming in or around this land immediately, and pray all of their plans for destruction and terrorism will fail. (Psalm 18:37)
  • Pray for law and order to be restored to this worn-torn land immediately, and pray the Kingdom of God will be firmly established in Somalia.
  • Pray for this situation to turn all eyes to the Lord Most High. Pray for ears to be open to the Gospel, and every heart to receive the Salvation found only in Jesus Christ. (Psalm 7:17; II Samuel 22:3)
  • Pray for a never ending revival to come to Somalia, where multitudes of new Somalis will continue to accept Jesus as Savior and Lord until the triumphant return of King Jesus.
