Leader: Sultan & Prime Minister Sir Hassanal Bolkiah
Brunei is a country of dense forests and mangrove swamps. It is on the island of Borneo and borders Malaysia.
The country generates huge revenue from oil and gas exports. This in turn ensures one of the highest standards of living in the world. However, with the dwindling oil and gas reserves, Brunei has sought to diversify its economy by showcasing the country as a financial and tourist destination.
Ethnic Malays comprise two-thirds of the population of Brunei. Other ethnic groups that call Brunei home are Chinese, Indians, and indigenous groups such as the Murut, Dusuns, and the Ibans. Each Malay in Brunei is deemed a Muslim at birth and they closely follow traditional Islamic beliefs. While the physical needs of people are met because of the abundance of wealth, few have heard of the saving love of Jesus Christ.
The ruling monarch considers himself the defender of the Islamic faith. In keeping with this perception, he does not allow the free practice of other religions. Contact with Christian Believers from outside the country is banned. The printing and importing of Christian literature is prohibited. And yet God is raising from among the Malays of Brunei a people unto Himself. They, however, constantly find themselves isolated and overlooked.
Pray for Believers in Brunei to continue to worship God and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those they come in contact with (The Bible, Mark 16:15).
Pray for Believers from Muslim Background to continually feel the warmth and love of God’s ever-abiding presence (The Bible, Psalm 46:1).
Pray that God would send more workers to work among the Malays of Brunei (The Bible, Psalm 96:3).March 2013 Edition of the Win 10/40 Reporter.
