A Call to Prayer for the Pashtuns
Having captured the imagination of various invading armies, the valor and ferocity of the Pashtuns have been immortalized and mythologized in songs and stories. They have been called the "unconquered tribe." The Pashtun people live in the region that straddles Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are geographically isolated. Though extremely poor, they have a great sense of pride. They are an enigmatic blend of hospitality and hostility. There are heartwarming stories of their shielding those who sought refuge with them. Then there are horrendous stories of their unleashing immense harm on others.
Over the years, certain members of this people group have coalesced to form the Taliban. The word Taliban in the Pashto language means "student." They adhere to a harsh interpretation of Sunni Islam, under which women and minorities are treated harshly and sometimes inhumanely. Scarred by years of invasion and foreign occupation, the Pashtun are both victims and perpetrators of unspeakable crimes against humanity. Influenced by a spirit of hatred and violence, in recent years, they have directed their aggression and hostility towards Christian Believers and Christian workers. Since 2007, they have murdered twelve Christian workers in Afghanistan and hundreds of other Believers in Pakistan. They have destroyed entire villages, churches, and homes.
When the Taliban gained power in Afghanistan, Christian Believers began to pray ardently for an end to Taliban control. Prayers were answered in 2001 when the Taliban regime fell. However, they have regrouped and have steadily gained power. And across the border in Pakistan, they have claimed responsibility for countless scores of killings and attacks against Christian Believers and other minorities. It is time that intercessors pray for the deliverance of the people and the region from the powers and principalities of darkness and evil.
Pray that God, the Author of peace, would bring peace to this deeply traumatized region (The Bible, 1 Corinthians 14:33).
Pray that the love of Jesus Christ would melt the hearts of the Pashtun people so they will turn away from destructive ways (The Bible, Psalm 51:10).
Pray for the protection of Christian Believers and workers in Afghanistan and Pakistan (The Bible, Proverbs 18:10).
