Once hailed as a potential model for African development, Guinea-Bissau is now one of the poorest countries in the world, having been devastated by years of struggle for independence, violence, and guerrilla warfare. It has a massive foreign debt and an economy which relies heavily on foreign aid. Between Senegal and Guinea on the western coast of Africa, Guinea-Bissau is a low-lying coastal region of swamps, rain forests, and mangrove-covered wetlands, with a scattering of islands off the coast.
When the country was a Portuguese colony, the Catholic Church was favored and other Christians experienced discrimination. Since independence, there has been growing freedom for all religions. While this is a positive trend, one result has been that many people in Guinea-Bissau have created a hodge-podge approach to their belief structure, mixing ideas from Catholicism, Islam, and African traditional religions.
- As Christian Church leaders in Guinea-Bissau are often responsible for multiple congregations, pray that prayer intercessors will be called to undergird them in prayer. Pray for an overflowing measure of supernatural strength and wisdom that will help them meet their overwhelming responsibilities.
- Pray that new leaders will be raised up – that they will receive wisdom and knowledge through discipleship and training.
- Pray that God will reveal Himself to people in positions of influence throughout the country, that they will in turn share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those around them.
- Three-quarters of the population cannot read; pray that the message of Christ will be passed on through radio, television, and oral communications.
