WindowKids June 2013

WindowKids - Banner NEW
Hymnie: Hello, WindowKids!  It's the month of June and we are going to one of the hottest places on planet Earth.  Are you ready for another great adventure?

Can you name all the ancient places that we have visited so far this year in 2013?  We traveled to Egypt, Mesopotamia, Turkey, and Jordan.  This month we are going to Saudi Arabia and Ancient Midian, where much of the early history of the Israelites took place.

Sometimes we have to do a little extra research to find out where some of the Biblical history took place, because the names of cities and countries have changed over the years.  We'll do our best to make sure we are looking in the right places!

Come along, Friends!  This journey is going to be A-MAZING!

Vocabulary for Ancient Midian

(Modern day Saudi Arabia)

Arab- the root word meaning "nomad"
Arabian Peninsula- Today, it includes the nations of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait
Bedouin- nomad; wanderer
Peninsula-a body of land surrounded by water on three sides
Red Sea-body of water to the south of the Sinai Peninsula, west of the Arabian Peninsula
Riyadh- modern-day capital of Saudi Arabia

Jethro, Priest of Midian - After Moses killed the Egyptian and fled for his life, he traveled all the way from Egypt to Midian (modern-day Saudi Arabia) and ended up at a well near the home of Jethro ("Reuel") the Priest of Midian (The Bible, Exodus 2:16).  Jethro had seven daughters.  One day when Moses was at the well, Jethro's daughters came to the well to water their father's flocks.  After meeting the seven women, Moses met Jethro and lived with his family.  Eventually, Jethro gave one of his daughters, Zipporah, to Moses in marriage.  Moses and Zipporah had two sons.

King Solomon- Besides being a great king, King Solomon was a brilliant businessman.  The Bible tells us that all of the kings of Arabia brought him silver and gold (The Bible, 2 Chronicles 9:14).  The Word also tells us that Israel's relationship with Arab traders continued after King Solomon.  Arabians brought King Jehoshaphat thousands of rams and male goats (The Bible, 2 Chronicles 17:11).

The Apostle Paul - Paul retired in Arabia for a while after his conversion (The Bible, Galatians 1:17).  We don't have much more information about his stay there, or specifically where he stayed in Arabia.

Moses and the Burning Bush- Moses was in the land of Midian. He was tending the flocks of his father-in-law Jethro, when he saw the burning bush (The Bible, Exodus 3:1).  When the Lord called to Moses through the burning bush, which did not actually burn up, He gave Moses instructions.  He told Moses to go back to Pharaoh and tell him to let the Israelites leave Egypt.

Red Sea - The Red Sea lies to the west of the Arabian Peninsula.  Moses and the Israelites crossed over the Red Sea into the Arabian Peninsula after the Exodus (The Bible, Exodus 14).  As they approached the Red Sea, God rolled back the waters and the Israelites walked across the sea on dry ground.  When the Egyptians tried to cross the sea behind them, the waters folded in and they were drowned in the waters of the Red Sea.

Prayer for Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is one of the modern-day countries in the land of Arabia.  Let's pray for the WindowKids of Saudi Arabia through the month of June!
  • Pray for freedom for Saudis to choose their own religion. There is only one officially recognized religion (Islam), and conversion to any other religion is punishable by death.
  • Pray especially for the cities of Mecca, Medina, and Riyadh.
  • Pray that the Lord would open the eyes of the millions of pilgrims who visit Mecca each year.
Lord, there are few places more dangerous on Earth for Christians to live than Saudi Arabia.  I pray for Saudi children and that You would open doors supernaturally for them to know You.  Amen.
