Sudan Speeds Up Destroying Churches Despite Pending Appeals

On 11 February, services had just concluded at Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church (SPEC) in Khartoum when three trucks arrived and began confiscating furniture, bibles, and musical instruments. Shocked church members watched as the authorities then proceeded to demolish the church building. This kind of persecution against Christians has previously occurred in Sudan, but this time members had filed an appeal in court, and it was pending. "We had hoped [officials] would not attack our church outside the court ruling, but it is clear that the government is acting outside of the courts," an SPEC leader told the World Watch Monitor.

In May 2017, there were 27 churches torn down with claims that they violated the designated purposes of the land on which they were built. The Sudan Church of Christ has also experienced similar persecution. Church leaders of both denominations have filed the necessary legal paperwork, but have been fined, and leaders have been accused of "objection to authorities." When confronted with the claims of absence of religious freedom, Sudan authorities claim that they are "fighting the phenomena of extremism and radicalism."

The nation of Sudan has risen from 5 to 4 on the 2018 Open Doors World Watch List of the worst persecutors of Christians in the world. Window International Network partners pray for Sudan on Day 2 in accordance with the Praying Through the Window 9: Global Terrorism and World Religions prayer calendar.

Please pray for:
  • God in His zeal to rise up as a Mighty Man of War (Jehovah Gibbor) and dispatch His warring angels to protect persecuted Christians across the globe (The Bible, Exodus 15:3 and Isaiah 42:13).

  • Sudanese Christian churches to persist in their efforts to comply legally with the government authorities as they continue to find ways to meet and worship (The Bible, Acts 5:29).

  • Sudanese Christian Believers to demonstrate love for their oppressors in such a way that non-believers will be drawn to Jesus Christ (The Bible,John 13:24-35).

  • Efforts by world leaders will expose these atrocities, put pressure on President Umar al-Bashir to protect Christians, Churches, and their property. Pray that corruption by government officials is revealed and perpetrators appropriately punished (The Bible, Micah 2:1).
