Escalating Christian Persecution in Nigeria Goes Unchecked

Boko Haram made big headlines in 2014 when Islamic radicals kidnapped more than 240 schoolgirls in northern Nigeria. Time has a way of eroding the public's interest in sensational news. In 2015 a new president was elected, Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim who vowed he would fight Islamic terrorists, but little inroads have been made. Now, a new threat looms, nomadic Muslim Fulani herdsmen seeking grazing land for their cattle. The villages in their relentless move south belong to Christian farmers. With no regard for life, they have slaughtered everyone in their path.

A new report reveals that 16,000 Christians have died in the last three years. 2,050 are victims of state violence, 7,950 are victims of police custody or captivity killings, 2,050 are victims of the Boko Haram insurgency, and 3,750 are victims of Fulani herdsmen. "Promises" by President Buhari have been feeble at best. "Christians are being driven out of their ancestral homes, and those who refused and stayed were indiscriminately targeted," according to World Watch Monitor. "Just in December 2017 and January 2018, not less than 350 mostly Christians were killed by Fulani Herdsmen and Boko Haram in the States of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Benue and Southern Kaduna," the report said.

The nation of Nigeria is number 14 on the 2018 Open Doors World Watch List of the worst persecutors of Christians in the world. Window International Network partners pray for Nigeria on Day 29 by following the Praying Through the Window 9: Global Terrorism and World Religions prayer calendar.

Please pray for:

  • God to convict President Buhari of his dereliction of duty and his responsibility to protect Christian citizens against terrorist attacks and kidnappings by Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen (The Bible, Deuteronomy 16:20).

  • God to arise and fight against the demon-possessed people murdering and stealing Christians' property and persecuting His people (The Bible, Deuteronomy 20:4).

  • Christian growth and development to sweep through Nigeria, bringing revival to established Christian communities and conversion millions of Nigerians (The Bible, 2 Corinthians 12:10).

  • Those who are violently attacking Christians to have a Saul of Tarsus experience and become fervent followers of Jesus Christ (The Bible, Acts 9:1-6).
