Buddhist Extremists Attack Muslims in Sri Lankan hill town of Digana

The fragile peace after years of civil war was rudely shaken Monday when extremist Buddhists attacked Muslims houses and 27 Muslim-owned shops in the hill town of Digana. One man was found dead in a burning house. Extremist Buddhism in Sri Lanka has been on the rise fueled by social media posts. Tuesday the government declared a 10-day state of emergency, but some feared it was too late coming. A week earlier a Muslim truck driver was attacked by extremists and died a few days later. Tensions have been steadily mounting and finally erupted in Monday's brutal onslaught.

The Sinhalese Buddhists make up 74 percent of the population, and the country's leaders have struggled to rein in their nationalist fervor.

Tamils make up 12 percent of the population and Muslims 10 percent, the two largest minorities in the country's 20 million population. Sri Lanka endured at 27-year war that raged between the government and separatist group, the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam. Since 2015 Sri Lanka has made slow progress with tentative plans hoping for reconciliation. Christian families are taking special precautions to protect their girls from violence.

The nation of Sri Lanka is number 44 on the 2017 Open Doors World Watch List of the worst persecutors of Christians in the world. Window International Network partners pray for Sri Lanka on Day 15 in accordance with the Praying Through the Window 9: Global Terrorism and World Religions prayer calendar.

Please Pray For:

  • God to intervene in the violence plotted and executed against the innocents in Sri Lanka (The Bible, Psalm 7:9).
  • God to particularly shield and protect the young girls and women against would be attackers who use unrest and violence as a cover for their despicable attacks against the innocents (The Bible, Matthew 18:14).

  • The leaders who have the awesome responsibility of protecting all of its citizens, no matter their religion or their ethnicity (The Bible, 1 Timothy 2:1-4).
